COMMON SENSE.
Making a Safe Fuel Even Safer.
Propane is a very safe fuel. But as with any energy source, there are steps you should take to further ensure your safety:
- Learn what propane smells like. We have scratch-and-sniff pamphlets to help your family recognize its distinctive odor.
- Know where gas lines are located, so you won't damage them when digging or working in the yard.
- Change or clean furnace filters regularly as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Don't store cleaning fluids, oil-soaked rags, gasoline, or other flammable liquids near a gas-burning appliance where vapors could be ignited by the pilot light.
LET'S BE RESPONSIBLE PARTNERS.
Sharp Propane's Responsibilities:
Thank you for considering Sharp Propane as your source for the best energy value in Texas. It is important for you to know what we do, and what we do not do, when we deliver propane to your house. It is also important for you to know what your own responsibilities are with respect to your gas system. For the safety and protection of you and your family, please read the following statement of responsibilities:
Here is what Sharp Propane does:
- We will safely deliver odorized commercial grade propane to your container.
- If we lease or sell a container and pressure regulators to you, we will install these items and check them for gas leaks. If necessary, we will install an underground gas line from the container to your house. If we do so, this gas line will be your property and your responsibility.
- If we turn on the gas to your system, we will test the gas lines inside and outside your house for leaks.
- If we turn on the gas to your system, we will offer to light the pilot lights on your appliances. We strongly encourage you, for safety reasons, to accept our offer. Many accidents and injuries occur when customers try to light their own pilot lights. However, if our delivery or service personnel light the pilot lights on your appliances, this does not mean we have tested, inspected or checked your appliances for safety problems. You need to have a qualified service technician do that. In some locations, Sharp Propane employs trained service technicians, and if these services are available in your area, we will provide them at your expense if you specifically order them from us.
- If you report a gas odor to us, we will dispatch one of our service or delivery personnel to check your gas system for leaks.
- In some locations, we offer trained appliance service personnel, who will install, inspect and repair gas appliances and piping inside your house. However, we do not provide these services unless you specifically order them from us. You are free to choose any qualified service technician to provide these services, and if you do not order them from us, we will assume that you have ordered them from someone else.
- While our delivery personnel may from time to time check the gas lines inside your house for leaks, this does not mean we have tested, inspected or checked your appliances for safety problems. You need to have a qualified service technician do that. In some locations, Sharp Propane employs trained service technicians, and will provide these services if you specifically order them from us.
- If one of our service or delivery personnel observes a potential safety hazard, we will so advise you. If we believe that the safety hazard is serious and imminent, we will so advise you, and we will shut off and red tag the appliance. However, if we do this, do not assume that we have conducted a full safety inspection of the appliance involved, or of the other gas appliances or system inside your house. Again, our delivery personnel are not trained to do this. In some locations, Sharp Propane employs trained service technicians, and will provide these services at your expense if you specifically order them from us.
Here are YOUR responsibilities:
- YOU are responsible to make sure that only qualified technicians install, service, repair, maintain and inspect the gas appliances and piping system inside your house. In some locations, Sharp Propane offers these services at your expense if you specifically order them from us. Other qualified technicians can include gas-certified plumbers, heating and cooling contractors, or appliance service companies.
- YOU are responsible to have your entire gas system, including all piping and appliances, checked by a qualified technician at least once a year. In some locations, Sharp Propane offers these services at your expense, if you specifically order them from us. However, if you do not ask us to conduct an annual check of your entire gas system, we will assume that you have hired another company to do this for you.
- YOU are responsible to read the safety literature that we provide to you about propane, and to follow the recommendations contained in it. YOU are responsible to read any other safety literature that we provide to you from time to time, and to follow the recommendations contained in it. YOU are responsible to share all of this safety information with every member of your household.
- YOU are responsible to report all gas odors in your house or on your property to us or your local fire department immediately. If you have installed one or more electronic gas detectors or carbon monoxide detectors in your house, you are responsible to report all gas or carbon monoxide alarms to your local fire department or to us immediately. When you call us, you are responsible to strictly follow the instructions that we give to you, and to insure that all family members and occupants of your house do so as well.
- YOU are responsible to provide written notice to us of all repairs, modifications, alterations or installations of gas appliances, piping, fittings or valves inside your house. If you provide such notice to us, we assume no duty to inspect, maintain or repair the appliances, piping, fittings or valves.
- YOU may never turn the valve on your propane container on. Whenever the valve is turned on, a leak check must be conducted of the entire piping system. This is required under the National Fuel Gas Code, NFPA 54. The leak check should be conducted by Sharp Propane, or by another qualified service company.
